About the Project

Welcome to the online gallery for Staging Pictures, a project by second year Devised Theatre students in the Department of Theatre at York University.

Using Carrie-Mae Weems’ Constructing History project as inspiration, students were divided into groups and asked to choose one moment in history to explore through three still images. The images were constructed as physical tableaus and designed to evoke a literal or abstract expression of the particular historical moment chosen. Each photo was staged with great precision and detail, taking into consideration key elements of visual composition that are central to directing compelling and socially resonant stage pictures in theatre: use of space, levels, gesture, distance between bodies, balance and proportion, variety, and emotional impact. Students were later asked to create movement-based compositions in response to photos staged by other groups in the class. The result is a kaleidoscope of histories refracted through the bodies and political perspectives of 21st century students.
